This is not the first time I’ve experienced a situation that matches those wise words, but the quote came in at such an apt time that it really sunk in.
“If you can’t, you must. If you must, you can.”
It’s a quote by Anthony Robbins. And when I read it a couple of weeks back, it struck me like anything; because of something that happened just a day before I came across the quote.
The difficulty - The “Can’t” part
Basically, I am a night person. Don’t jump to any conclusions there, I just meant that I almost always work late into the night to catch up on personal goals. I find it difficult to wake up in the morning, especially if I’ve not completed 8 hours of continuous sleep.
You know what? Deep down inside me, I have the wish to change my schedule such that I can wake up early - at about 5 or 6 in the morning - and complete loads of personal work before I leave for office. But it seems like a difficult task to me. Given the choice, I’d sleep some more and wake up just early enough to be able to reach office on time. That means waking up early is not dependable, and hence I’d rather do something late into the night than hope to do it in the morning. That way I don’t have to worry about losing time in case I do not get up early in the morning.
The situation - The “Must” Part
A few days ago I had an important milestone at office, and the team was required to reach office by 7 o’clock in the morning. Now that’s something I hate so much! But it wasn’t a matter of choice. It was very important, and we had to be there!
The outcome - The “Can” part
What do you think happened that morning? Could I not wake up even though I set my alarm clock to ring early? Was I late to office? Did it cause problems at work?
As expected, I couldn’t sleep early the previous night because my body was tuned into sleeping late. I went to bed early, but couldn’t sleep until much later.
And guess what? I woke up in the morning with a start, with eyes wide open and a short jitter of panic. Did I forget to set the alarm? Was it too late already?
Before I could think any further, the alarm rang. Yes, I had woken up just seconds before the alarm was set to ring. Out I jumped from bed, cutting out any lazy feelings, and I was the first one to reach office that morning.
Moral of the story
So, what happened?
From a “can’t wake up very early” difficulty, I landed up in a “must wake up very early” situation; and because I was in the must situation, I “could wake up early”.
And what’s the message?
If there’s something you can’t do, change the situation such that it becomes an obligation, which, if you were to fail at, would make things look real bad for you. Thus, when it becomes a must, you will naturally be inclined towards succeeding at it. When it is a must, you can, even if you normally can’t.
What have your experiences been? Can you think of a “must” situation that you have been in, which took you from a “can’t” difficulty to a “could” outcome? Do you consciously put yourself into “must” situations so that you can overcome your obstacles and achieve greater success? I’d love to hear your story.

We humans are very stubborn creatures but adaptable at the same time. Although we resist new circumstances and change, when necessity gives us no choice we rise to the occasion. I’ve experienced this many times in my own life, and it’s an important fact to remember when we have to face new challenges and situations.

NP,
It’s always a pleasure to hear your opinion.
Yes, when there’s no choice but to do it, we seem to get disciplined easily. Hence, the interesting point that I wanted to highlight here is that we should turn this to our favor by placing ourselves into “must” situations in order to overcome “can’t” difficulties.
I want to add a disclaimer though, that people should not take this too far… like, for example, by jumping off a cliff and expecting to be able to fly
Success always,
Mark

Ah!What a life-changing Mantra I have deduced from your story.
Impose self discipline to feel oneself in ” MUST ” situation in all walks of life. Nothing will in this world then be impossible.

Mark, this is so true! You have to put yourself into situations where you must succeed or failure becomes obvious. Then the can’t easily becomes can. You learned the most powerful lesson of all. That you can change! You are not wired a certain way and you are stuck with it. You found that you can change the wiring. Morning person - night person are habits not personality traits. Habits can change.
Good for you. You have conquered the biggest demon of all your will.

Your story really hit home for me. Just about every time I absolutely have to be somewhere for a meeting or an appointment in the early morning, I wake up in a slight panic two minutes before my alarm clock goes off. Any other day, I’d just hit the snooze button, but when I know I HAVE to get up, I do.
I bet that most people are the same way, and I also feel if we could manage to use this same philosophy in other aspects of our lives, we’d get out of our comfort zones and start doing things we “can’t” do a lot more often!

@Eric:
Hi Eric,
Welcome to Secrets of Success! Yes, success comes about more certainly when you give yourself no other choice.
The post was not so much about changing our habits though. But I’m glad you mentioned that. Gives me the opportunity to let you know what I am coming up with a new series right here to change habits through 21-day challenges. I look forward to seeing you around.
@Steve:
Steve,
It’s a pleasure to see you here at Secrets of Success. I had been waiting
And what’s more, you have been saving this for your birthday
“Happy Birthday!” once again!
Thanks for your kind comments, and I’m glad you liked the post. I agree with you that this would apply to most people (just stopping short of saying “everyone”), however much they may try to deny the fact. True, and if there’s someone who can truly apply this in all walks of life, there would be no limits to his/her success.
@Jam:
Jovir,
Glad to see you around after a long time. Had been thinking of dropping by your blog to let you know that you were on my top commentators list (It’s not that there was much competition though, LOL!), but I guess you figured that yourself already.
I also see that you have a new blog that you are promoting. I’ll drop by one of these days and check it out.
Wishing success to you all,
Mark
